Lottie Lyell was a silent film actress who became known as Australia's first movie star

She was born Lottie Edith Cox on February 23, 1890 in Sydney, Australia. At the age of seventeen she began her acting career on the stage. Lottie toured the country performing with several theater companies. In 1911 she made her film debut in Captain Midnight, The Bush King. That same year had a leading role in The Romantic Story Of Margaret Catchpole. It became a big hit and made her a star in Australia. She began a serious romance with the film's director Raymond Longford. Unfortunately he was married and his Catholic wife refused to give him a divorce. Raymond directed her in more than twenty films movies including The Midnight Wedding, Australia Calls, The Sentimental Bloke, and The Mutiny On The Bounty.

Lottie helped to write the scripts for most of her films. The lovely brunette also did all of her own stunts. In 1921 she wrote, directed, and starred in The Blue Mountains Mystery. She and Raymond moved in together even though he remained legally married to his wife. The couple formed a production company in 1922. During the early 1920s she began suffering from health problems and had to stop working. Her final film was the 1923 silent drama The Dinkum Bloke. Tragically on December 21, 1925 she died from tuberculosis. Lottie was only thirty-five years old. She was buried at Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium in North Ryde, Australia. When her longtime partner Raymond died in 1959 he was buried next to her.
